We’ve all heard the saying, “Home is where the heart is.” But after designing homes for years—and recently building my own forever home—I’d argue that the kitchen is where the heart is.
When my husband and I decided to build our new home, I didn’t start with the exterior or even the floor plan. I started with the kitchen.
Every other room was designed around it.
As empty nesters, we were intentionally downsizing, so every square foot needed to serve a purpose. My goal wasn’t simply to create a beautiful kitchen—it was to create one that functioned effortlessly for the way we live.
I chose a galley kitchen for its efficiency, but I made sure there was generous countertop space on both sides for meal prep. At the end of the kitchen, I added a scullery with a large farmhouse sink because I knew we’d have a large garden and I’d be washing fresh vegetables throughout the season.
People suggested all kinds of ideas—including a Costco door into the scullery. Instead, I designed a direct entry from the garage so unloading groceries would be simple and convenient. We also incorporated a drop zone for coats and boots, an extra refrigerator, and open shelving to neatly store home-canned goods and small appliances that aren’t used every day. None of these decisions were accidental. They were based on one simple question: How do we want to live in this home every day?
